FAQs About Safaris From Zanzibar
What parks are best for a safari from Zanzibar?
“Most parks on the Tanzanian mainland are a short flight from Zanzibar, although in some cases you may need to change planes in Arusha or Dar es Salaam. If I could visit just one area of Tanzania on my safari from Zanzibar, it would be the country’s north.
This is where you find Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, undoubtedly my top picks. Both destinations are close to Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks, which are fantastic wildlife destinations if you can spare the time. You would need a minimum of 10 days to do all four of these destinations. Another option would be to head south, where you’ll find the wildlife-rich Nyerere National Park, which is especially good for varied landscapes, as well as elephants and lions.
Visiting Nyerere would add at least 3 days to your overall trip. You could include Mikumi National Park and possibly even Ruaha National Park for a wilderness experience.”
How many days is recommended for a trip from Zanzibar?
The duration of your safari from Zanzibar will depend on your desired destination. For a short trip of 3 to 4 days, it's advisable to concentrate on a single park, such as Nyerere or the Serengeti. With a few additional days, you could include more parks, like Ngorongoro and possibly Lake Manyara in the north or Mikumi in the south.
If you can spare 10 days from Zanzibar, you might be able to explore the Northern safari circuit or visit three to four parks in southern Tanzania. It’s beneficial to discuss available combined Tanzanian safari and Zanzibar packages with your operator. Many travelers to Zanzibar also explore the Tanzanian mainland, so you should have numerous options.
One last point to keep in mind: if you're seeking a budget-friendly safari, it's important to limit the number of flights while on the mainland.
Is a Serengeti safari possible from Zanzibar?
It is feasible to merge a visit to the Serengeti with some time spent on Zanzibar, and many tours offer this combination. Typically, it requires a flight from Zanzibar to Arusha in northern Tanzania, followed by another flight from Arusha to one of the airstrips located within the Serengeti. Alternatively, driving from Arusha to the Serengeti is an option that allows you to experience other attractions along the route, such as Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, though this will increase your travel time significantly.
The Serengeti is truly worthwhile, and it's one of my favorite national parks in Africa. The wildlife here is astonishing, especially during the great wildebeest migration, which occurs at various stages from January through August or September. However, any time of the year provides excellent opportunities for wildlife watching in the Serengeti, where you'll encounter big cats, elephants, and a multitude of other species.
How much does a Tanzania trip from Zanzibar cost?
Determining the cost of a safari from Zanzibar to the Tanzania mainland involves numerous factors. As a rough estimate, you should anticipate spending at least US$300 per person for each day of the safari, with more upscale packages costing three times that amount or even more. Various reasons account for these price differences. One factor is your choice of accommodation: staying in luxury tented camps is significantly more expensive than opting for budget camping safaris. The number of flights you take can also greatly impact the overall cost.
Additional considerations include the total number of days you go on safari, the time of year for your trip (high-season rates can be twice as much as those in the low season), and the type of safari you select (for instance, a private safari tends to be pricier than a group safari).
Can you do a classic safari on Zanzibar Island?
A traditional safari experience cannot truly be achieved on Zanzibar Island. While the island does have some wildlife parks, they resemble zoos more than actual safari experiences, making visits quite different from exploring one of Tanzania’s national parks. If you’re looking for a genuine safari adventure while in Zanzibar, consult your tour operator for possible options.
They can provide recommendations regarding where to go and what wildlife you can observe by taking a flight to the mainland. Before engaging in that discussion, it's wise to conduct some personal research and have a clear understanding of the animals you’re particularly interested in seeing. For instance, if you want to encounter big cats and elephants, destinations like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Nyerere are all outstanding choices.
Conversely, if you wish to emulate Jane Goodall by tracking chimpanzees in their natural habitat, Gombe and Mahale Mountains National Parks (located in the country’s far west) should be prioritized on your itinerary.
