5 Questions About 3-Day Tanzania Safari
Is a 3 day trip to Tanzania too short?
A 3-day safari is quite short, but whether it is too short depends on what you expect. If you can, I recommend adding a few extra days. More time lets you settle in and really enjoy the bush experience. However, if time or money mean you have to go for a short trip, it's better than not going at all. Three days give you a chance to get out there and get a feel for it.
And I hope you can come back another time with more time. It's not a good idea to try to do too much on a 3-day safari. Remember that quite a bit of your time will be spent getting to and from your starting and ending points.
As long as you are realistic about what you can do on a safari of that length, it's definitely worth going.
What can I fit in during a 3-day safari in Tanzania?
When planning a 3-day safari in Tanzania, you have several options to consider. It's best to spend both nights in the same location since the time frame is limited. The most popular choice for a 3-day Tanzanian safari is the Northern circuit, which includes four parks: Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara National Park, and Tarangire National Park. While visiting all four parks in 3 days is technically possible, it's not recommended.
A more practical option is to visit the famous Serengeti and make a stop at the Ngorongoro Crater along the way. Alternatively, Lake Manyara and Tarangire are close to Arusha National Park and can be combined with a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater on a 3-day safari.
In the southern part of the country, Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) and Ruaha National Park can be visited separately as fly-in safaris from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. Mikumi National Park can be visited on a short road safari, which takes about 5 hours each way from Dar es Salaam.
What kind of accommodation can I expect?
"Tanzania has a well-established tourism industry offering a wide range of accommodation options. Budget camping tours are a popular and affordable way to truly immerse yourself in the environment. For a bit more comfort, you can consider a budget lodge tour. These options are located outside the parks, but they serve as a base for game drives.
There are also mid-range options available, consisting of larger, no-frills hotels both inside and outside the parks and reserves. For those seeking luxury, high-end lodgings are commonly used for fly-in safari packages. These luxurious accommodations offer great food and service, with a variety of styles, including small designer ecolodges designed to blend into the environment.
If you want to experience a Tanzanian safari in style, this could be the right choice for you."
Which animals can I expect to see?
“Tanzania has an incredible wealth of wildlife, and which animals you may see will largely be determined by which parks you visit. All popular parks have a good variety of safari animals. However, the parks and reserves all have distinct differences in terrain, and this is reflected in the wildlife that is commonly encountered in each of them. If you don’t mind a lot of driving, it is possible to visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on a 3-day road safari. This combination gives you a reasonable chance of seeing all the Big Five in a short time. Ngorongoro is the only reliable park in Tanzania to see black rhino in the wild.
The Serengeti and the Crater are both good for predators, and lions are particularly easy to find in both. Spotting a leopard on a 3-day safari is a bit trickier, but you never know your luck. To reduce driving time, you could fly in and out of the Serengeti and skip on the Ngorongoro Crater and its rhinos, or drive one way via the Crater and fly the other.
A 3-day trip to Ruaha or Nyerere in the south can be very productive. Predator sightings are more hit-and-miss, but you’ve a very good chance of seeing lion. The southern parks are known for wild dog, and Ruaha has a large variety of unusual antelope species, including the impressive greater kudu.”
How much does a 3-day safari cost in Tanzania?
Putting an exact price on a 3-day safari is challenging due to numerous variables. Budget camping tours start at around $600 per person, while mid-range lodge tours can cost up to $1,000 per person. Luxury tours are pricier. You may find better deals during the low season. Once you identify your priorities, obtain several quotes. Tanzania's parks and reserves are among Africa's finest, offering an incredible experience but at a premium price.
Accommodation ranges from budget to luxury, with camping being a cost-effective option if you are comfortable with basic amenities and want to be close to nature. The cost also varies based on whether you choose a private or group tour. Although many 3-day road safaris are available, a fly-in safari might be worth considering despite its higher cost.
