Tanzania is a world-renowned safari destination, home to some of the most iconic national parks in Africa, including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire. With so much to see and do, it can be difficult to decide how many days to spend on safari.
The ideal length of your safari will depend on a number of factors, including your budget, interests, and how much time you have available. If you're short on time, a 3-day safari can give you a taste of what Tanzania has to offer, but you'll likely only be able to visit one or two parks. For a more comprehensive experience, we recommend a 6-8 day safari, which will give you enough time to visit several parks and see a wide variety of wildlife.
Here is a more detailed breakdown of how many days we recommend for each of Tanzania's top national parks:
Serengeti National Park: 3-4 days
When considering an African wildlife safari for your holiday, Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is a must-visit destination. If you're wondering where Serengeti National Park is located, the answer is that you should start planning your trip to this incredible safari destination in Africa. Your experience there will be truly unforgettable. Situated in Tanzania, Serengeti National Park stands as the largest national park in East Africa. Within its vast expanse, you'll encounter a myriad of wildlife, ranging from the smallest creatures to the majestic giants. Serengeti National Park is an integral part of what's known as the Serengeti Masai Mara ecosystem, which encompasses various Game Reserves such as Maswa Game Reserve, Grumeti Game Reserve, Loliondo, and Ikorongo Game Controlled Area, along with a section of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area that borders the southern Serengeti. This interconnected ecosystem also extends into the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya.
Ngorongoro Crater: 2-3 days
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area extends over 8,000 km 2 (3,200 sq mi) from the Serengeti National Park in the north to the Great Rift Valley in the east. These include Ngorongoro Crater, Ndutu, Olduvai George, Empakai, Olmoti Crater and Oldonyo Lengai Mountain. A mixture of forests, valleys, savannas, craters, lakes and wetlands provides habitat for a wide variety of animals.
Tarangire National Park: 2-3 days
Tarangire National Park is famous for its big groups of elephants that amuse tourists with their tree-eating habits. You can also spot lots of other animals like wildebeests, zebras, warthogs, giraffes, gazelles, lions, hyenas, cheetahs, and the often hard-to-find leopard. There are even three rare species called the Great Kudu, Fringed-Eared Oryx, and Ash staling living in this park. Plus, the park is home to thousands of birds, with more than 400 different kinds, including some rare ones that migrate.
Lake Manyara National Park: 1-2 days
Lake Manyara is a great spot to see the super tall Rift Valley Escarpment, which is like a really long, deep crack in the ground. This crack was made around 20 to 25 million years ago when the Earth's outer shell split apart. It's so big that you can even see it from space, and it looks like two long lines on the map of Africa. The area around the Rift Valley has different kinds of places to explore, like forests with acacia trees, dense jungles, tall mountains, hot springs, wide open grasslands, more acacia forests, and a huge lake filled with soda water.
If you have more time, you may also want to consider visiting some of Tanzania's other national parks, such as Selous Game Reserve, Ruaha National Park, and Gombe Stream National Park. These parks are less visited than the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, but they offer excellent opportunities to see wildlife and experience the African bush.
No matter how long you choose to spend on safari, you're sure to have an unforgettable experience in Tanzania. The country is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and rhinos. You'll also have the chance to experience the unique culture and traditions of the Maasai people.
