Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking are immersive wildlife experiences that involve guided excursions into the natural habitats of gorillas and chimpanzees, our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. These treks take place in specific national parks and forests known for their populations of these primates, offering a unique opportunity to observe them in the wild.

Gorilla Trekking:

Gorilla trekking primarily takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, as well as in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The experience begins with a group of visitors accompanied by experienced guides and trackers.

Visitors hike through the dense forest, following the guidance of the trackers who are skilled at locating the gorilla families.

Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed to spend a limited time (usually around an hour) in close proximity to observe and photograph them.

The experience is heavily regulated to ensure the safety and well-being of the gorillas and their natural environment. Permits are required, and the number of permits issued each day is limited.

Location: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest takes place in southwestern Uganda, near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Best Time to Visit: The dry seasons from June to August and December to February are considered the best times for gorilla trekking. During these periods, the trails are less muddy, and the gorillas are often at lower elevations, making them more accessible.

Gorillas: Bwindi is home to the critically endangered mountain gorillas, one of the two gorilla subspecies (the other being the eastern lowland gorilla). Mountain gorillas are known for their distinctive fur, which helps them survive in the cold high-altitude forests. They live in close-knit family groups led by a dominant silverback male.

Facts About Gorillas:

  • Gorillas share 98% of their DNA with humans, making them one of our closest relatives.

  • Mountain gorillas are herbivores, primarily eating leaves, stems, and fruits.

  • They are known for their gentle nature, and aggressive confrontations within groups are rare.

Chimpanzee Trekking:

Chimpanzee trekking typically takes place in national parks and forests with thriving populations of chimpanzees, such as Kibale Forest National Park in Uganda.

Visitors are guided by experienced naturalists and trackers who are knowledgeable about the habits and territories of the chimpanzee groups.

Treks involve hiking through the forest, sometimes with challenging terrain, in search of chimpanzee communities.

Once the chimpanzees are located, visitors are allowed to spend time observing them, usually within a specified distance to minimize disturbance.

Chimpanzee trekking experiences also require permits to control the number of visitors and protect the primates and their environment.

Both gorilla and chimpanzee trekking offer a chance to witness these incredible creatures in their natural surroundings, allowing for a deeper connection with nature and a better understanding of primate behavior and conservation efforts. These experiences are not only thrilling but also contribute to the preservation of these endangered species and the ecosystems they inhabit.

Chimpanzee Trekking - Kibale Forest National Park, Uganda

Location: Kibale Forest National Park is situated in western Uganda, not far from the city of Fort Portal.

Best Time to Visit: Chimpanzee trekking can be enjoyed throughout the year, but the dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer more favorable trekking conditions.

Chimpanzees: Kibale Forest is a prime habitat for the common chimpanzee, our closest living relatives. These primates are known for their high intelligence and complex social behaviors, including tool use and sophisticated communication.

Facts About Chimpanzees:

  • Chimpanzees are highly social and live in communities led by an alpha male.

  • They are omnivores, consuming a variety of foods including fruits, leaves, insects, and even small mammals.

  • Chimpanzees have demonstrated problem-solving abilities and can use tools like sticks to extract termites or crack nuts.
