Gombe Stream National Park is located in the western part of Tanzania, near the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The park covers an area of about 52 square kilometers, encompassing a diverse range of habitats, including dense forests, grasslands, and the shores of Lake Tanganyika. This variety of ecosystems supports a rich biodiversity beyond chimpanzees, including various other primates, mammals, and bird species.

Location:

Gombe Stream National Park is situated in the Kigoma Region, approximately 20 kilometers north of the town of Kigoma. It is bordered by Lake Tanganyika to the west.

Weather:

The park experiences a tropical climate. The weather is typically warm, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). The region has distinct wet and dry seasons. The wet season usually occurs from November to May, while the dry season is from June to October. It's advisable to check current weather conditions before planning a visit.

How to Get There:

1. By Air: The nearest airport is Kigoma Airport, which is served by domestic flights from Dar es Salaam and other major Tanzanian cities. From Kigoma, you can then take a boat to Gombe Stream National Park.

2. By Boat: A common way to access Gombe Stream National Park is by boat from Kigoma. The boat ride across Lake Tanganyika offers scenic views and takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on weather conditions.

3. By Road: You can also reach Kigoma by road. There are bus services and private vehicles that connect Kigoma to other parts of Tanzania. However, keep in mind that road conditions may vary.

Once in Kigoma, you can arrange boat transport to the park, and some accommodations may provide this service. It's important to plan your journey and accommodations in advance, especially if you're interested in chimpanzee trekking experiences within the park.

Chimpanzee trekking.

Refers to the activity of hiking or walking through natural habitats, such as forests or national parks, to observe and encounter chimpanzees in their natural environment. It is a wildlife experience that allows individuals to witness the behavior, social interactions, and daily lives of chimpanzees in the wild. Trekking usually involves guided tours led by experienced wildlife guides or park rangers who are knowledgeable about the chimpanzees' habits and the surrounding ecosystem. This activity provides an opportunity for a close and respectful encounter with these primates while contributing to conservation efforts by promoting sustainable tourism practices.

In Gombe Streams National Park, you can do something really special – trekking with chimpanzees. These playful and noisy primates are fascinating, and in this park, you can get up close to them. Gombe Stream National Park is one of the best places in East Africa, and especially in Tanzania, to see chimpanzees in the wild. It's up north of Kigoma town, near the second deepest lake globally, Lake Tanganyika. The park, surrounded by miombo woodland and forests, is home to various primates.

The fame of Gombe Stream National Park grew when Dr. Jane Goodall conducted her chimpanzee research in the 1960s. Thanks to her work, there are habituated chimpanzee groups in the park that travelers can visit all year round. This provides a unique chance to observe these chimps in their natural habitat.

Apart from chimpanzees, the park hosts various other primates like olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, diademed monkeys, and red colobus monkeys. You might also spot leopards, bushbucks, buffalo, waterbuck, barbet, palm-nut vulture, Forbes’ plover, Pere’s twin spot, and the African Fish eagle, among other animals. Enjoy an adventure with chimpanzees and the diverse wildlife at Gombe Stream National Park.
